Enneagram FAQ
Both local assessments are unavailable. This page explains the theory and its limits, without offering a type result.
Can I take an Enneagram test here?
Both local forms are unavailable. The standard draft has 80 items and the short draft has 40 items. Item meaning and scoring direction need qualified review because some keys appear to conflict with their intended constructs. Neither local implementation has been empirically validated; item provenance, permissions, and evidence also need review.
What is the Enneagram?
It is a system of nine proposed narratives about motivation, fears, and behavior. Its concepts can be read as prompts for reflection, not established explanations of every person. A recognizable description does not prove a fixed underlying type.
What are the nine types?
Common names are 1 Reformer or Perfectionist, 2 Helper, 3 Achiever, 4 Individualist, 5 Investigator, 6 Loyalist or Skeptic, 7 Enthusiast, 8 Challenger, and 9 Peacemaker. Names vary by author. You may recognize several patterns or none; these are not nine proven categories that everyone must fit.
Is the Enneagram scientifically validated?
Evidence is mixed. Hook and colleagues' systematic review of 104 independent samples found mixed reliability and validity evidence and little research on wings and intertype movement. Research on other measures does not validate our local drafts. Clinical or coaching use by itself is not evidence of accuracy, treatment benefit, or diagnostic suitability.
What are wings, and does this site calculate them?
In Enneagram theory, wings refer to neighboring numbers, such as 3 or 5 alongside Type 4. Wings have limited research support and are not simply the two highest scores. No wings are computed by the local implementation. It also does not compute instincts or growth/stress pathways.
Are growth and stress arrows established psychological mechanisms?
No. They are concepts in Enneagram theory about proposed connections between types. Evidence is limited, and they should not be presented as established predictions of how someone changes under stress or through personal growth. The local questionnaires do not measure these pathways.
Will I keep one core type throughout life?
A stable core type is a claim within Enneagram theory, not something this site can establish. People and circumstances change, and questionnaires can produce different answers or labels. A changed result is not proof of integration, disintegration, or a treatment effect.
What if I disagree with an old result?
You can reject a result that does not fit. It may be wrong or uninformative. Disagreement is not evidence that you are resisting your true type or lack self-awareness. You do not need to retake a test or accept a label. Compare any useful idea with concrete examples and exceptions.
Do old scores show the probability of my true type?
No. Local numerical outputs are response-scale scores, not percentiles, population norms, or probabilities of type membership. Tied or close scores do not establish a definitive type. Unresolved item-key concerns mean old local results should not be relied on for typing, even after numerical scoring repairs.
Is the short form equivalent to the standard one?
No equivalence or equal precision has been established for these 40- and 80-item local drafts. Neither is currently offered, so there is no available session or completion-time promise. Fixing arithmetic does not resolve semantic keying, construct, or validation questions.
Can I use types for relationships, careers, or mental health?
Use this guide only for voluntary educational reflection, not diagnosis, treatment planning, hiring, promotion, educational placement, or eligibility decisions. Type pairings do not establish compatibility or career suitability. Ask people about their needs instead of assigning hidden motives. Seek qualified support for persistent distress regardless of any label.
Where can I read about the evidence?
The model guide links to Hook and colleagues' systematic review, The Enneagram: A systematic review of the literature and directions for future research. That review does not validate this site. A future release also needs qualified review of the actual local questions, keys, interpretations, and their evidence.
